Beatrice Causby Chapman, 101, closed her eyes on this earth to awake to God’s majestic garden of beauty and light on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.  Born in Burke County, NC on April 21, 1919, she was the oldest daughter of William Wesley Causby and Nannie Franklin Causby.  She was a devoted member of Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Beatrice worked in the hosiery industry for many years and for Wamsutta Mills.  In 1942 she married Hersel Chapman, whom she lost to cancer on August 3, 1979.  Beatrice gave up her full-time job to be a caregiver to her parents until their death.

“Aunt Bea” or “Miss Bea”, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, always had a dessert ready to serve when friends stopped by to visit.  She was known for her baking skills.  Her famous pound cakes would make their way to her beloved church for their Saturday ham and chicken suppers.  On one occasion she made seven desserts for one supper.

Beatrice’s yard was filled with many beautiful flowers such as roses, irises, lilies, jonquils, gladioluses, and one of her favorites, Confederate rose.  She took pleasure in providing floral arrangements for her church on Sundays.  With the help of her little red almanac, she would plant, prune, and harvest all the good things from her garden.  She canned many jars of green beans, tomatoes, beets, and okra which she shared with friends and neighbors.

Mrs. Chapman is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine C. Hoke and Mary Alice C. Walters.

Beatrice will be available for viewing from 12 to 1 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  All practical precautions are to be observed, including screenings and face masks.  A private family service will follow which will be streamed on the church’s Facebook page.  Beatrice will be buried in Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Communications at Denton’s Chapel UMC, 5358 Dentons Chapel Road, Morganton, NC 28655

The family would like to express their appreciation to The Berkeley for their compassionate, loving care provided to Aunt Bea.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
