Audrey Jean Perkins, 89, of Morganton, NC, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Born in Burke County, NC on August 12, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Robert Coy Powell and Annie Lee Shuffler Powell.
Audrey was a member of Zion Baptist Church until her health prevented her attendance. She retired from J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center with over 30 years of service. She was an amazing, selfless person who always took care of others before herself and would act as a live-in caretaker for people in need. A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandma, Audrey’s number one joy was her grandchildren; she loved to call and talk with them.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Brent Perkins (Mary Beth); daughter, Leigh Greene (Gerald); grandchildren, Kyle Fleming, Courtney Morgan, Cameron Greene, Chloe Greene, Annie Perkins, and Brenah Perkins; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Luke Morgan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Edward Perkins; brothers, Bob, Jackie, and Jerry Powell; and sisters, Gilda Arney, Shirley Tilley, and Carol McKinley.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Keith Rose and Rev. Rick Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Audrey, was my aunt. She called me every day to check on me. Sure will miss her.
My loving grandma you will be missed💕
My deepest sympathies to Brent and Leigh and your family. Audrey, was one of those rare souls who made everyone feel seen, safe, and loved. Her kindness was effortless, her generosity endless, and her heart wide open to anyone who needed it. To me, she was more than my best friend’s mom—she was like a mom to me too. She and Perk, welcomed me always in their home, loved me, guided me, and cared for me in ways I will never forget them. The warmth they brought into my life will stay with me forever. I am so grateful for the love Audrey gave and the example she set. Her legacy lives on in all of us who were blessed to know her. I know she is now reunited with him in heaven.
Praying for comfort and peace for this sweet family during this difficult time!! 🙏❤️🙏
