Arthur Laslett Smith, 93, of Morganton, NC, died Thursday, December 14, 2006. Born January 16, 1913 in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Robert A. Laslett Smith and Harriet Tilley Smith.
Arthur graduated in 1935 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY as a chemical engineer. He was instrumental in developing "plexiglas" with Rohm and Haas Co. in Bristol, PA. He later served as a consulting expert in reinforced plastics.
Mr. Smith sang publicly in a barbershop quartet called "The Tunesmiths" and had a great love for sail-boating. He was born in New Jersey, but has also lived in PA, OH, MD, NH, ME, DE, NC, and MA.
Arthur was an active member of the Christian Science faith and a member of the Christian Science Society of Hickory.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Preisler Smith of the home; a son, Allan Laslett Smith of Chatham, MA; two daughters, Sandra Melton of Morganton and Dorritt Vidosic of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
No formal services are scheduled at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Science Society of Hickory, 3048 North Center St., Hickory, NC 28601. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family.
