Annie Mae Cook Whisnant 87, and Melvin Harris Whisnant, 94, of Valdese both passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Annie Mae and Melvin both were born in Burke County to the late Samuel Coleman and Mary Ethel Moody Cook (her parents) and Willie and Bertha Harris Whisnant (his parents).

Mr. and Mrs. Whisnant were married for 72 years and members of High Peak Baptist church. Melvin retired from Drexel Heritage and loved working there. While Annie Mae did work for some restaurants, she spent most of her life taking care of the home and making sure her family had what they needed.

Melvin and Annie Mae are survived a daughter, Judy Whisnant Auton; grandchildren, Tammy Whisnant and Scott Franklin (Tonya); and great-grandchildren; Tyler, Jasmine, Christopher, Tegan, and McKinsie. Melvin is also survived by two sisters; Alice Shull and Betty Abee.

In addition to their parents Mr. and Mrs. Whisnant were preceded in death by a son, Boyd Whisnant; and their brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends from 2–3 pm Sunday, December 18, 2022 at High Peak Baptist Church. The funeral will be held in the church at 3 pm with Dr. Kevin Purcell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to High Peak Baptist Church or Amorem Hospice/Burke County.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

So sorry for your loss. My husband and I met them at College Pines several years ago when my MIL was there. Your mom was such a sweet lady and my husband would visit with your dad in the waiting room.
