Annie Bell Wiggins Womack, 90, of Morganton, NC walked out of her home with her cane on Sunday, January 2, 2011. A week later on January 9, she walked into her heavenly home without her cane. Born in Cleveland County, NC on December 10, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Elzie Amzi Wiggins and Australia Putman Wiggins. While Annie was still a young girl, her family moved to Morganton. Her first job was at Broadoaks, the private mental facility on Valdese Ave. Later she went to work as a C.N.A. at the State Hospital which later became Broughton Hospital where she was employed for thirty-seven and a half years until her retirement. While at Broughton, she met and married her husband, Frankie Lee "Jack" Womack. Annie always said she would have worked longer but she felt a strong responsibility to be at home. She cared for her mother and her husband until their deaths.Annie leaves to honor her memory, a son, Danny Womack and his wife, Kathy and their sons, Jonathan and Daniel Womack; a niece; two nephews; and her Chihuahua chair buddies, Misty and Tracy who will continue to cherish her memory.

Annie leaves a wonderful legacy as a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She was a godly woman who cherished her membership at Mt. Home Baptist Church where she participated in the Angel Tree Ministry which insures that children have a Christmas. She was an ardent patriot who loved her country. So much so that she felt an immediate obligation to pay her taxes usually on the same day the bill came in the mail! Having grown up in the Depression, she learned to be very frugal. Each spring and summer, she planted and tended a garden and either canned or froze her produce. When you visited in Annie’s home, you never left hungry! In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Lee "Jack" Womack; a brother, Edward Yates Wiggins; and sisters, Elverie Wiggins Peloris and Josie Lee Wiggins Hamby.Annie’s family expresses our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. James Croft, Dr. Drewno, the Grace Hospital fourth floor telemetry staff, and the staff of Burke Hospice for the wonderful and loving care given to Mom and our family! The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Mount Home Baptist Church with the Reverends Jerry Gamble and David Orders officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral hour. At other times the family will be at Mrs. Womack’s home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mt. Home Baptist Church Angel Tree Ministry, 2272 Mt. Home Church Rd., Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
