Annie Bashie Chastain Crutchfield, 94, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 following a period of declining health. Born in Thomas County, GA on November 13, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William Chastain and Nellie Benton Chastain. Bashie was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she served as an interpreter for many years, taught Sunday School, was a member of the Altar Guild, and was a member of the Vestry. Bashie was a girl scout leader for girls at Grace Church ranging from Brownies to high school. She interpreted for her husband at Boy Scout functions, and helped him with numerous Boy Scout activities. She graduated from Montreat College and was in the teacher training program at the NC School for Deaf. She spent her entire teaching career at NCSD. She was a member of the Morganton Lioness Club and the Friday Book Club.Bashie is survived by her son, Paul B. Crutchfield and wife, Sharon, of St. Augustine, FL; a daughter, Anne Crutchfield Chastain of Morganton; grandchildren, Jeter Crutchfield of Austin, TX, Brad Call of Asheville, NC, Operations Spec. 3rd Class Andrew Call of the U.S. Navy and wife, Sarah, of Bremerton, WA, and Josh Call and wife, Brenna, of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Gracie Call, Henry Call, and Abigail Call; a former son-in-law, Dale Call of Morganton; a brother, Hugh Chastain and wife, Ursula, of Orlando, FL; and special nieces, Betty Lou DeLaughter of Morganton, Pat Crutchfield, and Trisha Crutchfield, both of Drexel, and many other nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Bashie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bradshaw Crutchfield, five brothers, and two sisters.The celebration of Bashie’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. Bruce Walker, Rev. Scott Oxford, Rev. Kenneth Whittington, and Mr. Don Hemstreet officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690 or to the Altar Guild at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South King Street, Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
