Anita Carolyn Puett Turner, 78, of Morganton, NC died Thursday, July 21, 2016.  Born in Burke County, NC on August 4, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Jennings Carlyle Puett and Juanita Clontz Puett.  Anita was a lifelong member of North Morganton United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, was on the Building Committee, sang in the choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Anita was the first appointed policewoman in Morganton and retired from Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

She loved to volunteer, including being a literacy volunteer at Mtn. View Elementary and she was a 1987 recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. James Martin.   Mrs. Turner was also a member of the Sandy Beach Shag Club, was an active member of AARP, was a member of the Red Hat Club, and was the Pilot Club Sweetheart of the Year for 07-08.

Anita is survived by her sons, Trent Turner and his wife, Deborah, and Tim Turner and his wife, Cathy, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Katherine Turner Blinn and her husband, Kevin, Gene William Turner, Sarah Turner Smith and her husband, Robert, and Lucas Grey Turner and his wife, April; great-grandchildren, Sophiann Grace Smith and River Nicole Turner; a sister, Barbara Puett Biggerstaff of Morganton; and a brother, Joe Puett and his wife, Ryma, of Morganton.

In addition to her parents, Anita was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Turner; and a brother, Charles Puett.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2016 at North Morganton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jennifer Hampton and the Rev. Burt Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
