Committal
Angela “Angie” Grayson Clay, 62, of Morganton, NC, joined her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Born in Yancey County, NC on October 22, 1963, she was the daughter of Clinton Roy Penland and the late Maxine Lewis Penland.
Angie was a devoted member of Zion Baptist Church, and her love for God was evident throughout her life. She faithfully shared her faith until her passing and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Blessed with an incredible voice, Angie loved to sing. She also had beautiful blue eyes, a smile that could light up a room, and a warm spirit that made everyone feel like family. She enjoyed antiques and shoes and never met a stranger.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Dennis Jackson Clay; son, Bryant Clay (Kayla); daughters, Ashley Barrier (Mark) and Jordan Latner (Randy); grandchildren, Marlie Mauney (Riley Griffin) and Calum Clay; great-grandchild, Reese Griffin; brother, Brian Penland (Jennifer); sisters, Kim Williams (Todd) and Denise Anderson (Chuck); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m., Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Zion Baptist Church. The memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the church with Revs. Keith Rose and Rocky Reese officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America (www.lupus.org).
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Oh Sweet Angie….we go so far back!!! GA and Gibbs Chapel girls!! Your sweet smile will forever be in my mind and our love for chocolate covered strawberries never forgotten! Dennis, Clinton,Kim, Brian, Denise, children and g-children. So sorry for your loss. Angie was one of the sweetest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Went all through school with her & Kim also to Church at Bible Baptist on Jamestown rd. Angie Loved the Lord and you could see Jesus in Angie, one of the most beautiful smiles, never saw bad in anyone. I bet she's smiling really big now, Heaven gained a Beautiful Angel. Angie…you will always be remembered for your beautiful smile and kind spirit. You were a true fighter. God had a plan and it has been fulfilled. Dennis… you were such a loving and devoted husband and I know you took the best care of Angie and that’s what dedication and love to your spouse is all about.
