Alice Dunlap Sakowski, 98, of Morganton died Sunday, March 2, 2014. She was born in Stanly County on October 20, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Lucius Victor Dunlap and Margaret Ethel Bostian Dunlap. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur T. "Art" Sakowski who died in 1997. Mrs. Sakowski earned a B. A. degree from Woman’s College of Greensboro and went on to complete a post-baccalaureate certificate program from Katherine Gibbs in Boston. Upon graduation she became an administrative assistant to Congressman Robert L. Doughton. During World War II she was the administrative assistant to the Inter-American Defense Board. Mr. and Mrs. Sakowski were married in 1945 and moved to Morganton in 1955. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and also the D.A.R.Alice and her husband were charter members of Grace Ridge where she was an avid reader and bridge player.She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Sakowski and her husband, Alton Franklin, of Winston-Salem and Margaret S. Moore and her husband, Dana of Spartanburg; granddaughters, Meagan Moore of Boiling Springs, SC and Brennan Roberts and her husband, Dave, of Ft. Mill, SC; great-granddaughter, Finley Roberts; nephews, Peter Calinski, of E. Amherst, NY; nieces, Lynne Randazzo of Gainsesville, FL and Veronika Fukson of Berkeley, CA; and a sister-in-law, Aurelia Schmeiser also of Gainesville.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Dr. John Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Foothills Conservancy of NC, PO Box 3023, Morganton, NC 28680.
