Albert R. Hopper, 88, of Morganton died Thursday, June 20, 2013 following a period of declining health at his home where he had been lovingly cared for by Vicki Avery and his immediate family. He was born in Nassau County, NY on July 1, 1924 and was a son of the late Nathan and Mary Armeli Hopper. Al was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of V. F. W. Post 2770, Bellmore, NY. A carpenter by trade, Al was also a car enthusiast, an artist, and an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves.He was a loving husband and father, and leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years, Adele Conley Hopper of the home and his children and their spouses, Laurence and Kathy Hopper of Deland, FL, Linda and Richard Marzen of Morganton, and Dolores and Robert Troxel of Haddon Heights, NJ.A devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, he was blessed with eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Richard, Tracy, Melissa, Wendy, Mary, Amy, and Sara and eleven great-grandchildren, Mickaela, Braden, Anthony, Madelyn, Luke, Ben, Gracie, Nathan, Amber, Caleb, and Abby.In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn, and by a brother, Charles Hopper.A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Fr. Kenneth Whittington officiating. Burial will be at 12:00 noon on Tuesday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors conducted by the NC National Guard and the Buncombe County Veteran Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Monday at Sossoman Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence on Twin Oaks Drive.
