Agnes Preswood Shook, 96, of Linwood, NC (formerly of Morganton, NC) passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023. She was born on September 30, 1927 in Avery County, NC to the late Ernest Evander Preswood and Della Phillips Preswood. She was a member of Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church in Morganton, NC.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Shook; sons, Jerry Dean Shook and Allen Eugene Shook; brothers, Darrell, Rodger, Glen, Virgil, Dayton and John; sister, Dorothy Romines.

She is survived by her children, Garry Theodore Shook (wife Beth) and Judy Ann Langley (husband Mike); daughters-in-law Judy Shook (Jerry) and Eula Shook (Allen); ten grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren, and a special parrot, Baby.

During World War II, she missed her new husband so much that she boarded a train and traveled from North Carolina to Washington State. On the way, she sent her husband a surprise telegram that she was on her way there. What a brave soul at the age of 16 to travel all the way across the US by herself. They were married just shy of 68 years when they were separated by death. She was known as a wonderful Mother and Memaw who loved to do for her children and grandchildren. Many wonderful meals were eaten at her house by family and friends. If she knew what your favorite food or dessert was, it would be on the menu. She will be remembered for being so very loving, kind, and generous. She always said the only thing you take with you when you die is what you gave away.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Friday, December 1, 2023 at Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will begin 1 p.m. in the church with Revs. Rick Leissner and Ricky Hendrix officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, Morganton, NC would be greatly appreciated.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I was so sorry to hear that Agnes had passed. I delivered meals on wheels to her for a long time. We were friends. My son and his family live in Morganton and we had many conversations about Burke county. She was a wonderful woman.

Dear Gary and family , your Mom was obviously an exceptional , loving Mother , wife and friend and if I may add - a beautiful woman ! Her love for your Dad is so touching and it should be consoling that they are now reunited . My thoughts are with each of you and I know that you have many wonderful memories to cherish .

When Wade and I had our sons in the early '70s, we had no relatives in Morganton. Agnes and Ted became Memaw and Pawpaw Ted. What wonderful friends to us and God parents to our sons! We will always treasure them!

Aunt Agnes was rruly one of my heroes! She had a big heart, loved her family and friends totally and completely, and was a woman of so many talents! She leaves big shoes to fill, broken hearts to mend, and a great legacy of love. Until we meet again!
