Born in Burke County, NC on February 14, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Lee Mull and Virgie Stewart Mull.

Verlie was a faithful member of Mt. Home Baptist Church. She enjoyed being in the sun.

Verlie was the most precious, kind-hearted, family-loving person. She loved her kids and grandkids more than anything; they were her world. She always had the sweetest smile and always welcomed you with a hug and a kiss. She was so special in so many ways to so many. All that knew her loved her.

Verlie is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 67 years, Claude Nelson Roper; children, Renee Harwood and Roxanne Webb (Bobby); grandchildren, Kenny Harwood, Kevin Harwood (Katie), Zachary Pritchard (Chelsey) and Drew Hunt; great-grandchildren, Candice Harwood, Chasady Harwood, Teagan Pritchard, and Pacen Pritchard; great-great-grandson, Abshur Hall; and a sister, Shirley Saunders (James).

In addition to her parents, Verlie was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Christy Harwood and Alyssa Hunt; two brothers; and eight sisters.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Mt. Home Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church with Rev. David Orders and Rev. Rocky Hartman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

“Mom, we have always loved you with all our hearts. We will think of you every day until the day we see you face to face. You were always so good and sweet to all the people you met. Sending all our love until we see you again. Love you mom. Dad”

Verlie and her family were a wonderful part of my childhood. She always welcomed anyone who came to visit. Her bright smile will be missed, but we all will be reunited again.

The first time I came to Mount Home was on a Wednesday, and we sat to the far left of the church. I fell in love with the kindness of your parents. Your dad waited until the Wednesday service was over, and he said “We don’t need to sit so far away. Don’t worry we don’t bite. That Sunday was so busy and I was so nervous, but your mom took my hand and said come sit near us. We did almost every Sunday or Wednesday. You have been blessed with a wonderful loving family. With all our love Michael and Cynthia

It was a blessing when I met your parents, they were kind and supportive when I was sad from my loss. Your mom always had mints. You are an amazing person, and you get all of it from your mom. Cynthia

Verlie Roper was one of the best neighbors we have ever had, her & Claude invited me in there house and I felt very welcome anytime. She loved the Lord with all her heart we talked about the Lord and sometime we would just have church right there in the house. So Claude, Roxanne, Renee and extended family trust in the Lord with all your heart may GOD bless you in this difficult time.

We will miss seeing her sweet smile when she would be outside in her flower beds, or just outside watching over Claude. Together are were the best couple to look up to because they knew what TRUE LOVE & WHAT BEING MARRIED MEANT. I thank God that I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting and being friends with her. She will be missed by all. Love you till we meet again, and Mike & I will keep an eye on Claude for you.
