Peggy Joyce Wheelon, 78, of Henderson Mill Rd., Morganton, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Peggy was born in Burke County January 19, 1933 to the late Harry Grady Wheelon and Bonnie Mae Dellinger Wheelon. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by daughter, Beverly Oree Anderson McCall and a grandson James Guthrie McCall.Peggy was a member of Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Prayer Circle #2 and the Presbyterian Women. For many years Peggy was active in the Republican Party and Peggy was a member of American Business Women’s Association and The Glen Alpine Woman’s Club. She was employed by Lowes Food for 33 years. Peggy was a wonderful sister, and Amazing Mother, an Awesome Nanny and a compassionate friend. Her love for animals was only surpassed by her love for family and friends. Our mother enjoyed many years of travel visiting places from Edinburg, Scotland to Jerusalem. She enjoyed these jaunts with childhood friend Bob Terrell and his touring company. Mother has traveled even further now to her New Israel; heaven, to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Mother lived a quiet faith, instilling in her children the goal that should be firmly set forth, to be in our final days "One with the Lord." Mother also was an avid reader following the best sellers list and meeting personally many authors of her favorite reads. Her children and grandchildren can attest to her many culinary skills. She made the finest Italian foods and the best biscuits. Far more reaching was her ability to encourage the youth who crossed her path during her career in the food industry, encouraging them to "Reach for the Stars" through educational endeavors and by supporting many monetarily.Peggy is survived by a son, George Wesley Hawks, IV and wife Shirley of Hyde Park, New York; daughters Denise Anderson Bishop and husband Gary of Lake James Community, and Audrey Anderson Berry and husband, Burton of Morganton with whom she made her home; brother William Wheeler of Lake Forest, Illinois; sisters, Natalie Bumgarner and husband, William of Arcola, Illinois and Polly Cockrell and husband, Ray of Black Mountain; 12 grandchildren, Graham Bishop, Shane Bishop, Angel Williams, Amanda Knutson, Elizabeth Rollins, Buddy Hawks, Ehren Hawks, Melinda McCullough, Genevieve Chapman, Kristalynn Hawks, Autumn Hawks and Heather Hawks and 15 great grandchildren.A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Andy Parkey and Neil F. Brantley, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Berry Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
