Oliver C. Poteet, 81, of Morganton, NC who was ready to meet his Savior and loved ones died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Burke Palliative Care Center in Valdese, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on January 10, 1930, he was the son of the late Justus M. Poteet and Myra Dorothy Poteet. Oliver was of the Baptist Faith. He was a 1948 graduate of Morganton High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years during the Korean War. After his service he graduated from King’s College in Charlotte and went on to retire from Drexel Heritage Furniture Company after 35 years. Having no children of his own, Oliver was very devoted to his family. He was generous and loving to everyone.Oliver is survived by his step-daughters, Patricia Helms and husband, Wayne, of Morganton, Barbara Leadingham and husband, Velton, of Hickory, NC, Linda Dale of Newland, NC, and Kathy Turbyfill and husband, David, of Supply, NC; twelve step-grandchildren; thirty-four step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Josephine Small of Morganton, Myra Smith and husband, Earl, of Morganton, and Muriel Morgan of N. Canton, OH; a sister-in-law, Mollie Poteet of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Oliver was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Braswell Poteet; a step-son, Roger Dale Preswood; a brother, Isaac Poteet; and a sister, Emily Bass.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 9, 2011 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Turbyfill officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence on Whitley Rd., Morganton, and also at the residence of a sister, Myra Smith, Watts St., Morganton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Burke Hospice for their thoughtful assistance during a difficult time.
