Nina Geraldine Harris Coursey, 86 of Morganton said goodbye to this sweet world of sorry and began her new life with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 21, 2024, after battle with COPD.

Born December 5, 1937, in Burke County, Nina was the daughter of the late Henry H. Harris Sr. and Edna Souther Harris.

Nina was a homemaker until her three children were in grade school, then worked as a manager at Wendy's for 35 years before retiring. Nina considered her children her greatest accomplishment in life and took great pride in bragging about them to her friends and family. Nina loved to work in the garden with her husband and kids and enjoyed canning the beautiful vegetables they grew. Nina loved nothing more than cooking large meals for a table full of people and was known for her pimento cheese and scalloped potatoes. Nina had a very strong faith of the Mighty God that she served, her life was not always easy, she lost two husbands and a child, yet her faith kept her going. Nina never hung up the phone that she didn't tell you she loved you and God Bless You. In addition to spending time with her family, Nina also loved to play the slots in Cherokee. She loved her daily walks to the creek with her grand-dog, Gizmo. Nina had a beautiful smile, gave the best hugs, and faithful Christian example will be greatly missed by all who knew, Nina.

Nina was a lifelong member of Mtn. Grove United Methodist Church, a church she loved all her life. Nina served her community in the past as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary with the Oak Hill Fire Department and the Oak Hill Ruritan. Nina loved her community and loved helping people and even in death she will continue her kindness to others by helping medical students by donating her body to Wake Forest Medical School.

Those left to cherish Nina's memory are a daughter, DeEtte Conner and her husband, Doug, a son, Allen Coursey and his wife Laurie of Morganton. A stepson, Larry Coursey (Susie) of Lorain, Ohio. She was known as "Nanny" to her special grandson, the center of her prayers, Kristopher Childers: great grandchildren Kristopher Harkey, Makayla Conner, Katelynn Conner, and Madison Conner; a great great-grandson, Weston. She was a sister to Nancy Beck, Linda Cutris (Randy), and Carolyn Teseneer (Ronald), and several nieces and nephews, who fondly called her Aunt Dean.

In addition to her parents, Nina was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Murphy, the love of her life for 35 years, husband Don Coursey, a daughter, Nancy Coursey, a brother Henry "Sonny" Harris Jr., and a sister Sue Puckett.

The family will greet friends from 3:30 to 4 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Mtn. Grove United Methodist Church. A celebration of Nina’s life will follow at 4 p.m. in the church. The family requests that in grand Nina fashion wear your favorite pair of jeans. Nina loved nothing more than a comfortable pair of jeans.

The family would like to thank Donna Young who sat with Nina and the nurses and staff at Amorem for caring for Nina in her last days.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mtn. Grove United Methodist Church, 3624 Fish Hatchery Rd, Morganton, NC 28655 or Amorem, (amoremsupport.org/donate) 902 Kirkwood Street, NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
