Her family bids a loving cheerio to Mary Alice Howson Keeble Tate who left us on Good Friday, March 30th. Married for 68 years to the Honorable Samuel McDowell Tate, she leaves behind her beloved Sam, her children Jane Tate, John Tate, Susan Tate Henderson, and Martha Tate Lyster; granddaughters Eleisha Tate Hooper, Keely Henderson Doran, Anna Henderson, Stuart and Marley Lyster; and great grandson James Doran. Tragically after her passing, Mary’s son David also passed.

Born the youngest of three siblings in Hythe, Kent England on January 7th, 1927, she is predeceased by her brothers John and Gordon Keeble. Mary and Sam met while she was serving as a nurse during World War II. Married 5 years later, she moved to Morganton to begin her life and subsequent American citizenship. While raising her family, she served and ultimately retired as a school social worker and attendance counselor.  Mary was known for her eternal optimism and caring heart. She was quick to open her door to anyone in need and will be long remembered by the neighborhood children. Participating in her Presbyterian Church was her highest calling. Singing in the Choir, teaching Sunday school, and serving in the Synod and Presbytery of USA was her passion. She also worked at the JIRDC, the “Center”, and volunteered for many organizations including Grandfather Home for Children, American Red Cross, Life Enrichment Center, March of Dimes, Barium Springs Home for Children, NC Symphony, and had a love of acting in the Waldensian play “From This Day Forward.”

Services for Mrs. Sam Tate will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00am, Friday, April 6, 2018 followed by receiving. A heartfelt thank you to the fine staff at Grace Ridge Retirement for their honorable service in Mary’s care. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 Silver Creek Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
