Donald Ervin Smith, Jr., 48, of E. Union St. in Morganton died quietly Friday, August 13, 2010 at Grace Hospital surrounded by his family and a host of friends. He was born November 27, 1961 in Burke County and was the son of Donald Ervin Smith, Sr. and Betty Morris Smith of Morganton. Donald was a member of Mt. Home Baptist Church. He was a lumber broker and president of Hardwood Associates, Inc. for 19 years. Don served on the Board of the Burke Soccer Association for 10 years. One of the great joys of his life was coaching soccer, and he was very dedicated to his teams. Don was highly regarded and loved by his young athletes and by all who knew him.He was a loving and supportive husband to his wife, Kim Sutton Smith of the home; and leaves as his legacy, his children, Ethan Andrew Smith and Emily Elizabeth Smith, both of the home. Along with his parents, he is also survived by a sister, Kathy Smith McElhany and husband, Butch, of Morganton; a niece, Stephanie McElhany; parents-in-law, Chester and Jane Sutton of Newton; maternal grandmother, Audrey Meldona Morris of Morganton; and number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.Don was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Marley Smith and Eliza Mae Smith Greene; maternal grandfather, B. C. Morris; and a step-paternal grandfather, Verne Greene.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Larry Cline, Rev. Jerry Gamble, and Jamie Parsons, Evangelist officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be former members of his soccer teams. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral hour. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his parents, 207 Woodlawn Dr. in Morganton.
