Charles Gary Atchley, devoted husband, father and grandfather went home to be with the Lord on January 14, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. Charlie was born in Tahlequah, OK, March 12, 1944 to the late James Beryl Atchley and Von Marie Bench Atchley. Charlie was a proud member by blood of the Choctaw Nation of OK. He also served his country in the US Navy as an AMH3.  He retired from Great Lakes Carbon but continued to work in MO as a self-employed handyman where he made many special friends. He was passionate about horses especially his late horse Cody. He enjoyed horseback riding with his family and friends. Most importantly Charlie cherished the time he spent with his family especially his grandchildren. Charlie was a hard-working, honest Christian man who was loved by many both in NC and MO. He was a member of Blessed Hope Fellowship Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Jackie Skinner and Virginia "Bugs" Huffman.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Leota Creech Atchley of the home; daughters, Kim Stewart and husband, Scott, and Tammy Roper and husband, Shane, all of Morganton; step-children, Leatta Phillips and husband, Steve, of Ellisville, MO, and Darren Hines and wife, Tammy, of Columbia, IL; brothers, Gerald "Smokey" Atchley and wife, Joyce, of San Antonio, TX and Russell Atchley of Kansas City, MO; sisters, Patricia Eberhart and husband, Wes, of Bethalto, IL and Judy Roettger of Lake St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Jesse Stewart and fiancée, Brooke Carter, of Shelby, NC, Sydney and Samantha Roper of Morganton, Carson Stewart of Morganton, Bryce and Cameron Phillips of Ellisville, MO, and Brayden and Kelton Hines of Columbia, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Jim Taber officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
